Lindsey - where are you when we need you? We have lost these updates twice now so will try again!
We left Thursday morning, but not without some last minute stress. We called MAA Thursday morning in a panic because we had not received confirmation that our China travel wire went through. Then when zipping up the suitcase, the seam ripped open. And finally, as we did a last minute check of the paperwork, we realized we did not have an original document as requested. Another call to MAA reassured us once again. Finally we took off for the airport (only detoured by a stop for a new suitcase). We took off from Bloomington on a one hour flight to Detroit. There we had a six hour layover before embarking on a 13 hour flight to Beijing. Fortunately for Paul, he can sleep anywhere so caught quite a bit of shut eye on the flight. Kim was not so lucky with maybe an hour. After heading through customs and to the baggage claim, we were met by our guide Lee (pronounced Leo). He ushered us to a waiting van and after about a 45 minute drive downtown we were at our hotel (not really sure how you define downtown in a city of 23 million...) By this point it was 1AM Saturday Beijing time. Somewhere between the travel and the time change, we lost Friday!
